Simeon Says Email Newsletter - November '23 Update

With the general election over and the new National-led government now officially sworn in under Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, it is time to get New Zealand moving forward again. I know you have been waiting patiently for negotiations to conclude, and we now have a robust coalition agreement with the Act and New Zealand First parties to govern our country for the next three years.

As part of the new government, I have been asked by the Prime Minister to serve as a Minister in his Cabinet, taking on the portfolios of Transport, Energy, Local Government, and Auckland. I will also serve as Deputy Leader of the House, helping to ensure the new government's priorities are moved efficiently through Parliament. Being asked to serve as a Minister of the Crown is an incredible privilege, and an honour I do not take lightly. I am looking forward to getting stuck in and contributing towards a better future for New Zealand.

In this email newsletter, I talk more about:

  • The new National-led government under Prime Minister Christopher Luxon
  • My new Ministerial responsibilities in Cabinet
  • Out and about in Pakuranga

A National-led government to get NZ back on track

Last week, Christopher Luxon announced that National had come to an agreement to form a government in coalition with the Act and New Zealand First parties, and that government was formally sworn in earlier this week.

This was an important election for New Zealand with many challenges facing our country over the next decade. Kiwis have been struggling with a variety of issues like the cost-of-living crisis, increasing levels of violent crime, and difficulty accessing public services, among other concerns. The new National-led government has a plan to address these issues over the next few years as we seek to get our country moving forward again.

In the short-term, we will be releasing a mini-Budget before Christmas and the Prime Minister released our 100-Day Plan to provide Kiwis with some certainty around our immediate priorities. You can read our 100-Day Plan by clicking here. There is a lot of work to do, but National is up for the challenge.

My new Ministerial responsibilities in Cabinet

As part of the new National-led government, I was honoured to be asked by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to serve as a Minister in his Cabinet. The opportunity to take on such a role is one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I am excited to get to work.

In Cabinet, I will serve as Minister in charge of four portoflios: Transport, Energy, Local Government, and Auckland. Having previously served as Opposition Spokesperson for Transport and Auckland Issues I am already familiar with the work that needs to be done in these areas, and I will be getting up to speed on the issues facing Energy and Local Government over the coming weeks.

While my work as a Minister will undoubtedly keep me busy, I remain available as the MP for Pakuranga to meet with and assist local constituents with any issues they may have. If you are ever in need of assistance and live in the Pakuranga electorate, please don't hesitate to contact my office by calling 09 572 0000 or emailing [email protected].

Out and about in Pakuranga

A lot has been happening around Pakuranga over the last month, with several community events taking place as we head towards the end of the year and the holiday season. I have enjoyed attending events like the Wakaaranga School Gala and the Howick Village Christmas Fair, and am looking forward to upcoming events like the Howick Santa Parade next Sunday 10 December. I hope to see you around our community!

As always, thank you for your ongoing support!

Kind regards,
